Proyecto 'Wildflower Europe'

Dear Planta Europa colleagues,
I wish you a good start to 2013 and a successful and happy year. I am writing to let you know about a project that we are running with partner organisations in South East Europe called Wildflower Europe. It is part funded by the EU Culture Programme and the aim is to re-inspire interest in the culture history of Europe’s wild plants and trees and to bring economic benefit to rural communities who maintain wild plant rich landscapes through annual wildflower festivals. There is also a training element to develop tools to create community history archives. The information about the project is at www.wildflowereurope.org
One part of the project is to create a public participation work of art called the Patchwork Meadow. Anyone in the project countries can contribute a 15cm fabric square (sewing, knitting, painting, printing, felting, lace etc) that depicts a wild plant or plants. There is an online gallery where people can upload an image of their artwork and write some information about their chosen plant or plants. There will be a first exhibition of the national artworks at the flower festivals in May/June 2013 and in 2014 we will have a selection of the works from each country going to each of the flower festivals.

If anyone in the Planta Europa Network is interested in sending in one square from their country it might be possible to create a special section that celebrates the wildflowers from across Europe. We are trying to see if it would be possible to have an exhibition of this work from across Europe in Brussels in May 2014, but I stress that this is not confirmed yet. The aim is to show the rich history of Europe’s wild plants, how central they are to our cultural life as well as to biodiversity, and to reach new audiences who might not normally think about wild plants. If you are interested or you know someone who might be able to contribute a square from your country we would be delighted to hear from you.

The deadline for these squares would be the end of 2013, for exhibition in 2014. All the information about how to make the squares is at http://wildflowereurope.org/create-your-patch/

My colleague Jeremy Huet (jeremy.huet@plantlife.org.uk) will be coordinating this project and if you are interested and have any questions or suggestions you can contact him directly.

With thanks and best wishes
Seona
